The Midcoast MAINEiacs are a combination of two previously-separate robotics teams: Searsport-Area FLL, which supported three FIRST(R) LEGO(R) League teams of students grades 4 - 8; and the Viking Landers, which supported a FIRST(R) Robotics Competition Team with students grades 9 - 12. Both organizations were established in 2015. In our first year together, we have accomplished a number of significant achievements, including hosting our first-ever FLL qualifier tournament, raising $16,000, making the finals of an FRC competition for the first time, and winning awards at every competition we attended across both leagues. Next year, we will be organizing a FIRST(R) LEGO(R) League Jr. team, bringing in students from grades 1 - 3! We look forward to making even more progress next year!
The Midcoast MAINEiacs compete in FIRST(R) LEGO(R) League, FIRST(R) LEGO(R) League Jr., and FIRST(R) Robotics Competition, leagues operated by FIRST(R) (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), based out of Manchester, NH. Nearly half a million students from over 80 countries are projected to compete in FIRST competitions this school year. To learn more about FIRST and its programs, visit firstinspires.org.
More Than Robots℠
Building a robot is but one of many aspects of a successful team. That robot must be wired and programmed, too. And without throughly understanding the rules, a team can not design a functional, competitive robot. Designing a robot, either by hand-drawing or by CAD, requires its own unique set of skills. Then there is the business side. Affording to field a robotics team, let alone two, is expensive. The Midcoast MAINEiacs provides opportunities for students to develop business acumen, entrepreneurship, professionalism, marketing and public speaking skills, and an appreciation for public service and giving back to their community. From engineering, to programming, to business, to graphic design, and so much more, the Midcoast MAINEiacs have something for nearly everyone.
"Every Student Can Go Pro"
Unlike athletics, which have limited post-graduate opportunities and playing time is not guaranteed, a robotics team relies on the contributions of everyone to be successful. Not ready to be hands on with a robot? That's okay! There are a number of opportunities to get involved elsewhere with the team. Never programmed or used tools before? No experience necessary! We provide hands-on training to help you gain new skills in a safe environment. Not a strong public speaker? No worries! We'll help you develop your confidence and speaking abilities. Whether you have a future in robotics or not, we'll help you develop a wide range of skills and knowledge that will help you turn pro, no matter where you go.
